Highlights of this river cruise in Camargue
There are various routes available to navigate on the Canal du Midi. You can either go towards Castelnaudary for a gourmet cruise, towards Béziers or towards Carcassonne for a cruise focused on history. But now we are taking you in Camargue for a new cruise suggestion. There are four departure bases possible: Lattes, Carnon, Saint Gilles and Bellegarde.
The Camargue is a unique national reserve. You will get the chance to observe 283 bird species, horses, bulls and flamingoes. There is a towpath all along the Rhone-Sète Canal, so make sure to bring your bike for beautiful rides.

The impressive Etang de Thau is the largest body of water in Occitania! Discover the Etang de Thau museum, the villages of character, the Gallo-Roman villa of Loupian and enjoy some Bouzigues oysters, accompanied by a glass of Muscats wine.
Sète, the "Venice of Languedoc" is a city between the sea, canals and the Thau Lagoon. It is also the birthplace of Georges Brassens, to whom a museum is dedicated. From May to September, don't miss the water jousting tournaments!
The Etang du Ponant located in La Grande-Motte, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, is an artificial lake of 280 hectares. On the programme, observation of coastal and maritime birds, meeting with Camargue horses and relaxing by the water.
Rent a licence-free boat to navigate in Camargue
In Camargue, navigate by the sea or on a lake, in picturesque villages or in the quiet lands. If you go on the Etang de Thau, please be aware of the regulations. In case of wind, sailing on the lake can be more complicated or even forbidden. There are four departure bases in Camargue: Lattes, Carnon, Saint-Gilles and Bellegarde. Before boarding, you will have a one hour training session to get used to the steering of the boat.

4 possible starting bases
The locks are automatic or electric and manned by lock keepers. The locks are closed the 1st of may and the 14th of july.
The ladder of locks at Fonsérannes (near Béziers) is very busy during the high season. Frontignan Bridge opens twice a day, in the morning and mid-afternoon.
The one-way or the navigation towards the Carmargue while crossing the Etang de Thau can be canceled or interrupted if the climatic conditions, in particular the wind, do not allow to pass the Etang de Thau. This does not prevent you from sailing while waiting for the reopening of the pond to navigation.
You can moor anywhere along the banks on the Canal du Midi and in the Camargue.
