From Decize, many itineraries are available to you. You can leave for Briare for a river cruise in the heart of Burgundy, for Chalon-Sur-Saône to navigate on the Canal du Centre, or for Auxerre to navigate in the heart of nature. It is in this direction that we propose to take you.
Let's go for 180 km of navigable waterways. In this navigation area you have 6 departure bases: Migennes, Mailly-Sur-Château, Tannay, Corbigny, Châtillon-En-Bazois and Decize.

🌿 Lake Baye
Located at the highest point of the Canal du Nivernais, Lake Baye is a true haven of peace. Surrounded by forests and rolling hills, it offers an exceptional natural setting, perfect for relaxing, swimming, water sports and wildlife watching. Originally created to supply the canal with water, it is now one of the region's most beautiful landscapes. Visitors can enjoy paddleboarding, canoeing, hiking, cycling and even introductory windsurfing lessons at Baye.
⛰️ The Collancelle Tunnels
The Collancelle Tunnels are among the most remarkable engineering works on the Canal du Nivernais. To cross the watershed between the Loire and Seine rivers, the canal passes through three tunnels carved into the rock: La Collancelle (758 m), Mouas (268 m) and Breuilles (212 m). Between the tunnels, deep cuttings covered with lush vegetation, often nicknamed the "Little Amazon", create a spectacular and unforgettable cruising experience. Passage through the tunnels is supervised by lock keepers, who regulate boat traffic.
🌊 The Sardy Lock Flight
After leaving the famous Collancelle Tunnels, the Canal du Nivernais descends into the valley via the impressive Sardy Lock Flight. Over just 3.6 km, 16 successive locks allow boats to descend around 40 metres, creating a spectacular experience in the heart of a peaceful wooded landscape. Running alongside the greenway, this remarkable series of locks is one of the canal's greatest engineering achievements and one of the highlights of any cruise on the Canal du Nivernais.
🚲 Cycling Route
A cycling route and greenway follows the canal for approximately 175 to 180 km, between Auxerre and Decize (Saint-Léger-des-Vignes). It mainly follows the former towpath and forms part of the Tour de Bourgogne cycling route. It allows cyclists to follow the boat for almost the entire cruise, making it ideal for crews where some prefer cycling while others continue navigating.
This is one of the reasons why the Canal du Nivernais is considered one of France's finest destinations for combining boating and cycling, thanks to its continuous greenway and its exceptional heritage, including picturesque villages, lock houses, the Collancelle Tunnels and the Sardy Lock Flight.
Cities and villages to discover during your cruise
Les Voûtes de la Collancelle: The Collancelle tunnel is 758 metres long, the second, the Mouas tunnel is 268 metres long and the last, the Breuilles tunnel is 212 metres long. This work was dug by more than 1200 men who worked daily to build this splendid and unique work of art, embedded in a luxuriant vegetation.
The Sardy lock scale: 4 km north of Baye, with its 16 locks, this scale is one of the largest in France. In order to make this passage pleasant, craftsmen have settled in the lock houses (painter, potter,...).
Clamecy: Once the capital of timber rafting, Clamecy has a marina on the Nivernais Canal at the foot of a hill. Two nautical stops are worth a visit: Villiers-sur-Yonne, with its pretty town centre full of flowers, and Chevroches, a former quarry village, which overlooks the entire Yonne valley.
The Baye lake and water activities: The Baye lake leisure centre offers many land and water activities to do with family and friends. Bike rides, canoeing, paddle, windsurfing, hiking to discover the fauna and flora. S-JeanBaptiste
Navigation conditions for renting a boat without a licence on the Canal du Nivernais
The Nivernais Canal stretches for 180km and winds from the Decize cottages to the vineyards of the Auxerrois. This canal has 116 locks. They are automatic and operated by lock keepers, making navigation easier and less tiring. It is the ideal destination for those who wish to enjoy a river experience punctuated by the passage of locks and in the heart of nature.
There are several departure bases on this canal: Joigny, Migennes, Mailly-le-Château, Tannay, Corbigny, Châtillon-en-Bazois and Decize. All the departures of the boat cruises are in the afternoon and before leaving, you will receive a short training of 1 hour to familiarize you with your boat without a licence.

7 possible starting bases
The locks are automatic or electric and most are manned by lock-keepers.
The locks are closed the 1st of May and the 1st of November.
The locks are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and are closed for lunch between 12 and 1 p.m..
On the Canal du Nivernais, there is a ladder of 16 consecutive locks: the locks of Sardy.
- From 22 July 2026: the Canal Latéral à la Loire is closed between La Besbre Lock (PK 29, near Dompierre-sur-Besbre) and Maimbray Lock (PK 182, near Belleville-sur-Loire) until April 2027 due to insufficient water resources.
- From 31 July 2026: the Canal du Centre is closed until further notice due to insufficient water resources.
- From 16 August 2026: the Briare Canal is closed until further notice due to insufficient water resources.
Between Saint Jean de Losne and Mâcon, you must only stop at designated moorings, elsewhere you can moor anywhere along the banks in the heart of the countryside.
