There are various routes available to navigate on the Canal du Midi. You can either go towards Castelnaudary for a gourmet cruise, towards the Camargue for a nature gateaway or towards Carcassonne for a cruiske focused on history. But now we are taking you around Beziers for a new cruise suggestion. In this area, there are 5 departure bases : Le Somail, Narbonne, Colombiers, Port Cassafières and Agde. This river cruise between Le Somail and Agde will take you through an exceptional heritage.

The old Béziers which would be the oldest city in France.
Locks of Fonsérannes. In order to descend 20 m and catch up with the Orb, the creator of the Canal du Midi, Paul Riquet, had a ladder of 7 locks built, one of the most impressive passages of the Canal du Midi
Narbonne, City of Art and History. As soon as you enter the town you will be impressed! You will pass under one of the only bridges in France with houses on it. This city was one of the main Roman garrisons outside Italy.
Rent a licence-free boat to navigate on the Canal du Midi
The Béziers area, also called “Biterrois” is the part of the Canal du Midi that has the smallest amount of locks, so the navigation is very easy and peaceful. From Argens to Béziers you will navigate on the Grand Bief, 54 km without locks. Take time to admire the surrounding landscapes before arriving to Béziers and going through the much-vaunted Fonsérannes staircase which will take about half a day.
There are three departure bases for your river cruise in the Biterrois: Colombiers, Port Cassafières et Agde. Before boarding you will have a one hour training to get used to the steering of the boat.

6 possible starting bases
The locks are automatic or electric and manned by lock keepers. The locks are closed the 1st of may and the 14th of july.
The ladder of locks at Fonsérannes (near Béziers) is very busy during the high season. Frontignan Bridge opens twice a day, in the morning and mid-afternoon.
The one-way or the navigation towards the Carmargue while crossing the Etang de Thau can be canceled or interrupted if the climatic conditions, in particular the wind, do not allow to pass the Etang de Thau. This does not prevent you from sailing while waiting for the reopening of the pond to navigation.
You can moor anywhere along the banks on the Canal du Midi and in the Camargue.
