Navigation conditions for licence-free boat hire on the Canal de l'Est

During your cruise on the Canal de l'Est, you will encounter manual locks but most of them are operated by lock keepers.

You can start your cruise at the base of Pont à Bar where you will receive a short 1 hour training to introduce you to the principles of navigation and to familiarise you with the operation of your licence-free boat.

2 possible starting bases

The locks are manned by lock keepers. They are closed on some bank holidays.

Navigation on waterways in the Ardennes is quite easy and perfect for your first experience of boating.

You can moor anywhere along the banks in the heart of the countryside, except on the River Meuse where you have to use the designated moorings.

The Canal de l'Est

Sedan

The emblematic fortified castle of Sedan will transport you directly to the Middle Ages. Built on a rocky outcrop in 1424, the fortified castle is an essential part of French history. It is a must-see site, with free or guided tours available all year round.

Mouzon

Of the fortifications, only the Burgundy Gate remains. This town, which was for a long time situated on the eastern border of the Kingdom of France, has changed nationality several times.

Stenay

This town was the former HQ of the Germans during the Battle of Verdun in the First World War. Fortified since 1610, it is here that Champagne biscuits were invented. Do not miss the beautiful mill on the Meuse.

Dun-Sur-Meuse

You can stop off at Dun-Sur-Meuse, an old town overlooking the Meuse valley. In this small village, you can discover a charming church by houseboat. You can also moor your licence-free boat and enjoy a pleasant walk with a breathtaking view of the canal and the surrounding fields. You can swim in the Lac Vert leisure centre near Dun-sur-Meuse.

Verdun

During your river cruise, discover Verdun, a true symbol of the Great War. You will discover several remarkable buildings, such as the Episcopal Palace, the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Citadel. The Verdun Memorial offers an exceptional museography. Leave your captain's hat behind and walk in the footsteps of the soldiers who went to the front. Embark on a houseboat cruise and each day will be a real reminder of history.
