Navigation conditions for licence-free boat hire in Ireland on the Shannon
Shannon, located in the middle of Ireland, is an easy river to navigate. It is an ideal destination for beginners. But beware, in windy conditions, navigation can be a little more difficult. The few locks you will encounter are all electric and open daily from 9am to 7pm. A magnetic card sold at the base for 13€ gives you access to locks, toilets, showers and emptying. Moorings in public ports are free and cost about 15€ in private marinas. Please note that it is forbidden to spend the night at anchor on the lakes.
You can start your licence-free cruise on the Shannon at Portumna, Carrick-On-Shannon, Carrick and Banagher. Before leaving your home base, you will receive a short 1 hour training session to familiarise you with the operation of the controls and to introduce you to the manoeuvres.
The locks are electric and open every day from 9h to 19h. A magnetic card sold at the bse 13 € offers you the passage of locks, toilets, showers and emptying.
Children up to 17 years old must wear a lifejacket.
Mooring at public ports are free and cost around € 15 in private marinas. It is forbidden to spend the night at anchor on the lakes.
