Navigation conditions for licence-free boat hire on the Rideau Canal

Navigation on the Rideau Canal is easy and the course of the canal is regular. The Rideau has 47 locks and 24 lock stations. The locks are manual and operated by lockkeepers, which makes cruising easier and more enjoyable. An additional mandatory fee will be added to your booking to cover overnight moorings at Parks Canada, Portland Harbour, Seeleys Bay, Perth and Westport. For all other moorings, the extra charge will be payable locally.

You can start your licence-free boat cruise on the Rideau Canal at Smiths Falls. And before you leave, you will receive a short 1 hour training session to introduce you to licence-free boat navigation and to familiarise you with the operation of the controls.

Smiths Falls

The locks are manual and maneuvered by lock keepers. They are open from 9h to 19h, from Friday to Sunday and public holidays. The rest of the week, they are open from 9h to 18h (from 10h to 16 before June 21 and after September 5).

The season opens from May 17th to October 14th. Navigation is easy and the course of the regular channel

Additional mandatory fees will be added to your reservation to cover overnight moorings at Parks Canada, Portland Harbor, Seeleys Bay, Perth and Westport. For other moorings, the supplement will be paid locally.
