Osselle

The name of this village comes from the Latin "oricella," because the Doubs River carries small amounts of gold in this region. Gold panners disappeared after the 18th century, but from time to time, competitions are held, and the river mysteriously proves generous. Just 3 km from lock no. 57, you’ll find the Osselle Caves, which are easily accessible by bike. These caves served as a hiding place during the 17th-century wars and the Revolution. They are open to the public every day from April 1st to November 30th.

It was in this town than Napoleon was educated; a museum and statue are dedicated to him. Auxonne is also home to an old fortified castle and a former dwelling of the Dukes of Burgundy (which has since become the town hall), as well as the Royal Gate.

Walk along the ramparts designed by Vauban and appreciate the ingenuity of his military architecture. The Phare de la Méditerranée is a former water tower converted into a restaurant with panoramic views. You can relax in Parc Saint-Pierre, located at the foot of the lighthouse.
