Founded in the 12th century, Laroque-des-Arcs, inhabited since Roman times, was established to protect the "arches" that carried water from the valley to the baths of Cahors. The remains of this Roman aqueduct are still visible at Pech de Clary (right bank), along with the ruins of the toll tower, which allowed local lords to collect fees from travelers using the river.

Looking closely at the cliffs, you can see the "Castle of the English," an 11th-century fortress carved into the limestone rock to protect villagers in case of attack. A little further up, perched on the heights, you will spot the Chapel of St. Roch.
