3 Days on the Canal du Midi: the Port Cassafières to Sète Itinerary
3-day river cruise on the Canal du Midi: a weekend between Agde and Sète on a licence-free houseboat
What if your next long weekend took place on the water? This 3-day river cruise from Port Cassafières takes you all the way to Sète, between the shaded canal, the Étang de Thau and the seaside. On the agenda: one of the oldest cities in France, the only circular lock in the world, black volcanic sand beaches and the birthplace of Georges Brassens. 64 km, 6 locks, 10 hours of cruising. Perfect for a first experience or a short break.
Day 1: from Port Cassafières to Agde on a licence-free houseboat, discovering the Black Pearl
Two hours of cruising are enough to reach Agde, founded in the 6th century BC by the Phocaeans. It's one of the oldest cities in France.
Along the way, two remarkable structures. First the Libron crossing, a unique metal structure built in 1857 to let floodwaters pass beneath the canal. Then the round lock of Agde, built in 1680: the only circular lock in the world, directing boats in three different directions.
The historic centre of Agde, nicknamed the "Black Pearl" for its volcanic stone houses, is well worth exploring. Its cobbled streets and the Saint-Étienne cathedral, built in black basalt with its 35-metre tower, are immediately striking.
For beach lovers, Cap d'Agde is just minutes away. The Grande Conque with its legendary "Two Brothers" rocks surrounded by black sand, the Môle beach with its terraces and children's rides, or the Fort de Brescou, built on a volcanic islet by Vauban.
💡 Did you know? The round lock of Agde is the only structure of its kind in the world. Its circular shape allows boats to be directed towards the Canal du Midi, the Hérault river or the Étang de Thau.
12 km, 2 locks, approx. 2h of cruising.
Day 2: river cruise from Agde to Sète via the Étang de Thau
The finest day of the cruise. You leave the Canal du Midi to sail across the Étang de Thau, the largest body of water in Occitania. The landscape changes completely: no more plane trees, just an inland sea lined with oyster farms.
First possible stop at Mèze, a small town founded in 600 BC. Its fishing port, Penitents' chapel and lively market hall are worth a stop.
Then on to Sète. Canals wind between colourful facades, the harbour breathes in the sea air. From Mont Saint-Clair, the view stretches across the entire coast. From May to September, water jousting tournaments bring the quays to life. It's also the hometown of Georges Brassens, whose dedicated museum is worth visiting.
Return in the evening to Marseillan for a peaceful night in this charming little port on the edge of the lagoon.
💡 Did you know? Marseillan is the birthplace of Noilly Prat, the famous French vermouth, produced here since 1813. The cellar by the lagoon is open for visits all year round.
34 km, 1 lock, approx. 4h30 of cruising.
Day 3: return by houseboat to Port Cassafières, final cruise on the Canal du Midi
A last morning on the water. Enjoy the calm of the return journey, take in the scenery from a new angle, have a coffee on deck and let time drift by at 8 km/h.
Return your licence-free houseboat by late morning. If you have a little extra time, the beaches of Portiragnes are just minutes away, and the Roque-Haute Nature Reserve (over 400 plant species) offers one final nature break.
18 km, 3 locks, approx. 3h of cruising.
