River tourism in Anjou: our advice on places to see and discover in Angers

In France, many waterways are accessible to barges and boats without a permit. In the west, several regions allow you to indulge in the joys of river tourism, including Mayenne and Anjou. Two very beautiful destinations, where the magnificent landscapes follow one another along the water. And among the emblematic places, which are really worth a stop of one or more days, there is Angers. Indeed, the one that is nicknamed the capital of Anjou enjoys beautiful treasures, a superb setting in the heart of the Loire Valley and is very dynamic. To visit in pairs, with your children or your loved ones, its many charms will not fail to seduce you!

The capital of Anjou, a city of art and history

To date, we offer various itineraries for river cruises. In Anjou, you have the choice between a few tours and you can also create your own. In both cases, don't hesitate to spend some time in Angers! The city has a rich heritage that can be discovered in part in a few hours/days. To help you in your visits, we recommend some monuments and places that offer a beautiful insight into the history of Angevin:

  • Saint-Maurice Cathedral, a Gothic style building renowned for its splendid red and blue stained glass windows dating from the 12th and 13th centuries
  • The city's fortress with its 17 towers, ramparts and masterpiece: the Apocalypse hanging, 140 metres long and 6 metres high;
  • Adam's house and its rather original architectural style, with wooden panels and posts decorated with carved figures;
  • The Fine Arts Museum, where art and archaeological objects, plans, photos and portraits related to the history of Angers, as well as paintings are on display;
  • The Jean Lurçat and Contemporary Tapestry Museum where you can admire tapestries dating back to the 20th century;
  • The collegiate church of Saint-Martin, which allows you to travel back in time.

Green spaces, one of the assets of the Angevin city

In addition to the monuments of Angevins, other sites, more natural this time, are really interesting to discover during your stopover. If you like green spaces, you will be delighted because, in Angers, there are many of them! You can go for a walk at the Terra Botanica where games and entertainment appeal to young and old, the wonderful plant garden or in the Arboretum park where more than 10,000 plant species are gathered! For fans of the French garden, go to the garden of the Mail, especially in summer because the flowers are very beautiful. To walk with children, the Garenne Park is ideal, especially as it provides them with games such as pedal carts, a carousel and toy boats. Finally, stroll through the cobbled streets of the old town to see its medieval monuments and private mansions.

Does this make you want to visit Angers? Don't wait any longer to book a river cruise on our site with a stopover in the Angevin city!
