7 days on the Charente on a licence-free houseboat: from Cognac to Rochefort
7 days on the Charente on a licence-free houseboat
Picture a peaceful river winding through vineyards, historic towns and classic Charente villages. No strong currents, few locks, unspoilt nature and stops steeped in history. A houseboat holiday on the Charente is exactly that: a cruise that is both accessible and rich in discovery, where every day brings its own highlight. Here is the 7-night itinerary departing from Cognac, heading to Rochefort and back.
Day 1 — Cognac to Dompierre: the Cognac cellars and the last chain ferry in France
18 km, 2 locks, approx. 2h45 of navigation
The cruise begins in Cognac, birthplace of François I and the world capital of cognac brandy. Before casting off, a visit to the cellars is a must: several of the great Cognac houses open their doors year-round. In the evening, you arrive at Dompierre-sur-Charente, a quiet village with a remarkable curiosity: the last working chain ferry in France. In July and August, the crossing is free. An anachronistic and utterly charming sight.
Day 2 — Dompierre to Port d'Envaux via Saintes: 2,000 years of history in a single day
32 km, 1 lock, approx. 4h30 of navigation
This is the most historically rich day of the trip. Saintes, founded in the 1st century, is a must-see town of Art and History: a Gallo-Roman amphitheatre, the Arc of Germanicus, the Abbaye aux Dames, and the church of Saint-Eutrope, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take your time moored at the quay before continuing to Port d'Envaux, where the Château de Panloy and its tapestries are well worth a visit. Along the way, near Saintes, the Seugne delta is an ideal spot for birdwatching: purple herons and kingfishers are regular visitors.
Day 3 — Port d'Envaux to L'Houmée via Saint-Savinien: the children's miniature harbour
18 km, 1 lock, approx. 2h45 of navigation
Saint-Savinien is a stop that families love. The village has a leisure base with a miniature harbour where children can pilot their own small boats, as well as a water-ski site less than a kilometre from the pontoon. The night is spent at L'Houmée, the ideal departure point for the following day's highlight.
Day 4 — L'Houmée to Rochefort and back: the highlight of the week
34 km, 0 locks, approx. 4h30 of navigation
This is the centrepiece of the week, and by far the most impressive day. Rochefort, founded by Colbert under Louis XIV, is a Town of Art and History with an exceptional maritime heritage. The replica of the frigate Hermione, built using historical techniques, is an unmissable attraction. The Corderie Royale, the naval history and naval medicine museums, the house of Pierre Loti... you could easily spend several days here. The boat heads back to L'Houmée in the late afternoon. Worth noting: this stretch is tidal, which adds an extra dimension to the navigation.
Days 5 to 7 — The return journey: the same stops, a different perspective
Return via Port d'Envaux, Saintes, Dompierre back to Cognac
The return leg of a Charente river cruise is never a repeat. The same stops seen from the opposite bank, travelling in reverse, offer a completely different feel. Take time to wander through Saintes again, swim at Chaniers, and linger at Dompierre for one last chain-ferry crossing. The final day back to Cognac covers the same 18 km and 2 locks as day one, closing out a week that will have felt far too short.
