Croisière en péniche week-end de l'Ascension ou de la Pentecote

Can you really pilot a licence-free boat when you've never navigated before?

No licence, no experience, and completely safe

The question everyone asks before booking

It's often the last thing holding people back before clicking "book". You like the idea, the destination is chosen, the group is on board... but a little voice asks: "What if I'm hopeless at the helm?" Good news: piloting a licence-free houseboat requires absolutely no prior experience. Here's why.

Do you actually need a licence to pilot a houseboat?

No. In France, boats under 15 metres with an engine output not exceeding 4.5 kW can be operated without an inland waterways licence. Every boat offered by CrisBoat falls into this category. You need no qualifications, no prior training and no nautical experience to get on board.

Did you know? The French inland waterways licence has existed since 1956. But licence-free regulations have long allowed complete beginners to enjoy the canals legally, as long as the rules of navigation are respected.

How do you learn to handle the boat?

Before every departure, the CrisBoat base team provides a training session of around one hour. This briefing covers everything you need to know: starting the engine, basic manoeuvres, mooring, lock passages and navigation rules. It's practical, hands-on and tailored to genuine beginners. By the end of that hour, you'll be ready to set off with complete confidence.

Is a houseboat difficult to handle?

Much less than you'd think. The maximum speed on French canals is 8 to 10 km/h, roughly the pace of a jogger. At that speed, the boat responds gently and gradually. You have time to see what's coming, correct course and adjust. The vast majority of CrisBoat guests say they get the hang of it naturally within a few hours, sometimes less. The hardest part is often... stopping yourself from grinning.

And the locks, are they complicated?

It's the question that comes up most often. Locks are part of the adventure, and they're far more manageable than they look. On CrisBoat waterways, many are manual: you operate them yourself using a handle or a gate. On waterways with a lock keeper, they handle everything. Either way, one run-through is enough to get the feel for it. Children, in particular, love taking charge.

What happens if something goes wrong on board?

CrisBoat provides 7-day-a-week assistance throughout the entire duration of your cruise. If you have any doubts, experience a breakdown or simply have a question, you can reach the team at any time. The boats are also equipped with all required safety equipment. Navigating without experience doesn't mean navigating without a safety net.

FAQ - Boating without a licence and without experience

The training session provided by the base team lasts approximately one hour. It covers handling the boat, basic manoeuvres, mooring and lock passages. No prior knowledge is required.

No. To go on a river cruise with CrisBoat, there must be a minimum of two people on board, including two adults. This is a mandatory safety requirement, particularly for mooring manoeuvres and lock passages.
