All you need to know about holidays with your dog on board a river boat
Are you the type of person who never wants to be without your favourite fur ball when you're on holiday? Are you used to sharing all your adventures with him? Then a river cruise is the type of holiday you absolutely must try!
You'll be steering your rental boat yourself, but no worries if you've never done it before because you neither need a licence nor previous experience to hire and steer a river boat ! You will get a training before starting your cruise.
Furthermore, a river boat is like a bungalow: they're fully equipped (kitchen, crockery, bedding, etc.), except that you won't have any neighbours, and the scenery will change from one minute to the next!
Need any more arguments?
- Stability: Your dog won't get seasick on this cruise. There are no waves or swell here! Peaceful navigation on a canal or river is ideal for a first boating experience with your four-legged friend.
- Comfort: The interiors of the river boats are well laid out, creating a pleasant and safe environment for your pet throughout the journey.
- Always close to land: You are free to make as many stops as you like during your cruise. Take breaks either in the open country or in a town or village! This will give your dog a chance to stretch its legs, relieve itself or take a long walk with you along the canal.
If you have a small, well-behaved dog, any of our river boats will be appropriate. If your dog is rather large, we advise you to choose one of our following boat models: Sedan, Estivale, Salsa, Tango, Calypso or Vision. These boats are very easy to access, have no stairs, and offer a large terrace so you can all enjoy the sun together.
However, please note that some of our boats, i.e. the Caprice or the Sheba, are equipped with a ladder, which may make it more difficult for your dog to get around on board. Although all our boats are equipped with railings, it is always essential to remain vigilant with regard to your pet.
If you want to take your pet on a boating holiday in Europe, please make sure your pet meets the following conditions:
- He is identified by an electronic chip or a legible tattoo (if made before 03/07/2011).
- He has been vaccinated against rabies between 21 days and 1 year before departure.
- He has a European passport
If your destination is Ireland or the UK, please make sure you also treat your dog for echinococcal worms between 24 and 120 hours before arrival. Before you leave, check the conditions for travelling abroad with a pet.
1. Make sure your dog knows how to swim. If not, please keep a close eye on him, and consider tying him up or providing him with a life jacket (lifejackets for pets are not supplied on board).
2. Take with you the essential supplies for your dog's life on board, such as his basket, blanket, toys and food, so as to make it easier for him to settle in and feel at home on board.
3. When passing through the locks, we advise you to lock your dog in the boat or tie him up so that he does not disturb you during the manoeuvre.
4. When you're planning your cruise (itinerary, visits, stopovers) take your pet's needs into account: plan regular stops, and why not stop off in the countryside so you can take him for a walk in a green setting. A pleasant break for him and for you! Some places (towns, parks, beaches) may require your dog to be kept on a lead.
5. Bear in mind that the non-slip fibreglass upper decks of river boats are designed for our shoes, but they can be slippery for a dog's paws. We advise you to take along a non-slip mat or cushion large enough for your dog to lie on when he goes on the upper deck with you.
6. Pack a torch and/or headlamp, and equip your dog with a luminous collar for the evening.
7. Remember that you are responsible for your pet at all times during the cruise. Make sure your pet is safe and comfortable on board.
8. Make the most of your holiday with your pet! That's what river cruises are all about: an adventure on the water with your loved ones. Stroll along the towpaths, swim in the river and have fun!
9. One last bit of advice: don't miss the photo session with your furball on holiday! If you've got some hilarious shots or cute moments, share them with us on social media using the hashtag #CrisBoat. There's no better way to add a touch of fun to our newsfeed! 📸🐾
