Recently rehabilitated, the work was completed in June 2017, it consists of 8 egg-shaped basins and 9 doors. It connects the Garonne to the pond of Thau. Located in Béziers, on the right bank of the Orb, it offers a magnificent view of the city. It is also the starting point for many river trips. And if you go on a cruise on the Canal du Midi, you can cross it and discover this beautiful work and even visit it.
A spectacular work by Pierre-Paul Riquet
Founder of the Canal du Midi at the end of the 17th century, Pierre-Paul Riquet imagined the 9 locks at Fonseranes. Their construction lasted 2 years, from 1678 to 1680. Measuring 312 m long, they are characterized by their impressive vertical drop of 21.5 meters between the top of the locks and the level of the Orb. Majestic, this book is considered as a masterpiece of engineering and as a technical feat. At the time, it was created to promote trade. Today it is mostly used by boaters. Lined with a water slope in the early 80's, it underwent major redevelopment between 2015 and 2017 to restore its splendor.
