SELF DRIVE RIVER BOAT RENTALS FROM Narbonne
This beautiful city in the south of France is the starting bridge for river cruises by boat without a license on the Canal du Midi to Trèbes. Narbonne was the most important Roman colony out of Italy, while you walk you can visit the museum of Archeology and see many vestiges of this period.
The locks are automatic or electric and manned by lock keepers. The locks are closed the 1st of may and the 14th of july.
The ladder of locks at Fonsérannes (near Béziers) is very busy during the high season. Frontignan Bridge opens twice a day, in the morning and mid-afternoon.
The one-way or the navigation towards the Carmargue while crossing the Etang de Thau can be canceled or interrupted if the climatic conditions, in particular the wind, do not allow to pass the Etang de Thau. This does not prevent you from sailing while waiting for the reopening of the pond to navigation.
You can moor anywhere along the banks on the Canal du Midi and in Camargue.
- By car: Hypermarket GEANT (Direction PERPIGNAN), CARREFOUR (motorway exit "Narbonne Est). Closed on Sundays.
- On foot: CARREFOUR CITY, 5 min (from 7.00 to 20.00 from Monday to Saturday and Sunday morning) and a small grocery store / Bread depot on the other side of the canal, facing the base (open from 7.00 - 12.30 and 15.30 - 19.00 except Sunday afternoon)
- We recommend the Covered Market in the city center, open every day from 8.30 to 12.30.
- Fishing is allowed on the canal in any season, a license is required. A "holiday" permit is granted from June to September, and can be bought in specialized shops or in a tobacco shop in the first village. It costs about 30 Euros and is valid for 2 weeks.
- General information about navigation To reach the first village, you will need two hours of navigation from the base. The Canal du Midi is four hours from the base.
- Mooring is free on most of the Canal du Midi. In the ports located on the Etang de Thau, it takes from 20 to 40 € per night. Rates may change
- Car: From the motorway exit NARBONNE EST, follow the direction GARE. Arrived in front of the station, turn left and go straight to the canal. The Quai d'Alsace is located on the right before crossing the canal From the motorway exit NARBONNE SOUTH, follow the direction CENTER VILLE. In the center, at the roundabout with a fountain, follow direction Béziers, continue until after the media library, and the concrete building, then turn left, following the signs "QUAI D'ALSACE", continue straight on 300m and take a right just before crossing the canal. The base is 200m, just after the bridge.
- Train: lagare de Narbonne is located 1.5km from the base. From Narbonne, 10 trains between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm for around € 25 to Toulouse, 20 trains between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm for € 13 to Carcassonne, more than 20 trains between 6:00 am and 8:00 pm for € 17 to Montpellier
